West Wales background

I grew up on a mixed agricultural farm in West Wales, adjacent to my grandparents' dairy farm. I'm Welsh, I speak the language fluently, and food and farming have always been central to my life. My childhood centred around spending time outdoors, looking after animals, and roaming the land, and that early connection to the natural world has never really gone away. Figuring out how living things work is what drew me into biology and, eventually, into research.

My work has increasingly sat at the intersection of science, technology, commercialisation, and venture capital. I feel strongly about science and technology translation, and am particularly drawn to scientists who can build, operators who think from first principles, and founders creating new categories before the market has fully caught up.

As an aside

Painting

I paint in my spare time, mostly the sea. Naval warships from Patrick O'Brian's Master and Commander series are a particular obsession.

Watersports

I surf and kitesurf. Ten years in and there's always something new to figure out.
